Thomsen-Baker-Telfer STEM Scholarship 2024 Awards
At the AAUW-WHC Branch luncheon on June 15, 2024, our own Thomsen-Baker-Telfer Scholarship Fund awarded three area graduating seniors $3,500 scholarships.
Fathia Fakoya from Elsik High School (Alief ISD) will attend Texas A&M University in College Station where she will study Neuroscience. Fathia plans to become a neurosurgeon.
Natalie Skeen from Northbrook High School (Spring Branch ISD) will attend the University of Texas in Austin, majoring in biology. Natalie will pursue a pre-med program and plans to attend medical school and become an MD.
Emerie McCann from Young Women’s College Preparatory Academy (Houston ISD) will
attend University of Texas in Austin majoring in Environmental Engineering. Her goal is to
tackle environmental issues in underserved communities.
NOTE: The announced HISD recipient at the June Luncheon was Lola Giwa. After the luncheon Lola was awarded a full scholarship to Xavier University of Louisiana. Thomsen-Baker-Telfer had to withdraw its offer of scholarship funds to Lola as she has zero need in her Xavier account. Thomsen-Baker-Telfer’s guiding procedures do not allow the fund to give money directly to a student. We wish her the best of luck in her studies and future career!
Thomsen-Baker-Telfer STEM Scholarship 2023 Awards
Natalie Nguyen – Kerr High School, Alief ISD
My name is Natalie Nguyen, and I am a graduating senior at Kerr High School in Alief ISD. I have participated in and won awards for band, writing, and math competitions throughout the last four years. I also ensured that I completed plenty of volunteer work, such as helping at the Houston Food Bank and Hope Clinic, planting trees, picking up trash, and tutoring young children. I am committed to the University of Texas at Austin and will study statistics and data science with the ultimate goal of becoming a data analyst for a biotech company because I want to relieve some of the medical burdens of the people in our community. Since my favorite subject in school has always been math, I thought this career path would be the perfect way for me to achieve my goals while doing what I love.
Shelsey Ramirez – Spring Woods High School, SBISD
Hello my name is Shelsey Ramirez and I am part of the National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society, and my school’s Student Council. I will be attending Texas A&M this fall and will be majoring in Biology, towards a career in nursing. I plan to become a registered Nurse in pediatrics. With my career in nursing I hope to be able to give back to the community in which I was raised, by going into the medical field and helping the younger generations to come.
Karla Trejo – Sharpstown International High School, HISD
I’m an officer of the school’s first established Future Medical Leaders of America Club. I am also active in my school’s fine arts clubs such as the art club and creative writing club. I’ve won multiple awards for my art, including having received a special merit award for the Houston Livestock and Rodeo School Art Program and a regional medal from the Texas Art Education Association Visual Art Scholastic Event. I’ve played in my school’s girls soccer team in both middle and high school, assisting in bringing the team to become 2x high school district championship winners. I’ve danced all throughout both middle and high school, eventually becoming a hobby outside of school. I plan on attending Lehigh University where I intend on majoring in psychology. I’ve always been fascinated by all things crime and mystery. I realized that there are many aspects in identifying and catching criminals. Specifically, the utilization of psychology and behavior. Majoring in psychology will be the first step towards my goal of becoming a behavioral analyst. I hope to be able to catch perpetrators utilizing the knowledge I’ll gain at my university.
